Our History

A Summary of our History & Funding

The hospital was opened on October 13th, 2012, with the first patient being received in the clinics at 10AM, and the first surgical operation being performed on October 19th, 2012, for a war-related injury that required an external fixation of the thigh bone. The hospital’s establishment was made possible by the generous donations of individual supporters, who have continued to provide financial support over the years.

In the early days of its operation, the hospital relied on individual donors for support, which continued from October 2012 to September 2014. During this period, an adjacent block was added with the help of Syrian and Kuwaiti donors, comprising 12 beds for children and women.

After that, the hospital began receiving support from Relief International, starting from October 2014 to May 2015, during which a specialised center for dermatological diseases was established, and arthroscopic surgery was introduced. In the same year, preparations began for the big dream that was envisioned from the beginning, which was a specialised academic centre serving the Free Terrorites of Syria in general. It consisted of a building annexed to the hospital, in cooperation with the Tamkeen Project for Atma and Aqrabat, the medical and supportive efforts of Sweden, and with the Kuwaiti Mercy Cover campaign and with the support of the Integrity and Adam Smith organisations. The building was divided into four floors, with each floor having an area of 1000m2.

Starting from June 2015 until January 2016, support was received from the Physicians Across Continents organisation. With the beginning of the new year 2016, work moved to the new building and construction work was completed in it. From January 1, 2016, until March 14, 2016, the hospital worked voluntarily without support from any party. From March 15, 2016, until June 15, 2016, the hospital was supported by the Qatar Red Crescent.

With the start of work in the new building, the number of visitors increased by 100% in addition to an increase in the number of surgical operations due to the presence of 7 surgical operation rooms. From June 16, 2016, until September 30, 2016, the hospital received some grants from several entities that contributed to securing the salaries of the staff.

On August 8th, 2018, the partnership with the Humanity and Inclusion organisation was initiated to establish a centre for physical therapy and psychological support, and this partnership has continued until present day.

From October 1st, 2016 to December 31st, 2019, the hospital was supported by the SAMs organisation.

From January 1st, 2020 to March 31st, 2020, the hospital operated voluntarily without receiving any support from organizations.

In July 2021, the partnership with the Humanity and Inclusion organisation was expanded to include a prosthetic center for the hospital and the support has continued until present day.
